Hi all, just a quick post to let you know that Elizabeth Berge is hosting an extra get-together this Wed night (18th July, 7.30pm) at her place. Message her on Facebook if you want her address (or email Heleen, link in sidebar on this page). She's promised to bake us some cake, yum! Hope to see you there....
Meet the Sock Monkeys, two of a bigger group that we made at Lucky Penny on Tuesday night. We're making some for the Great Sock Monkey Challenge, run by Rachelle from Ahiparagirl and her friend Olivia whose little boy has leukemia. When they're all made up, our monkeys will be given to Starship to distribute to the little ones with critical or long-term illnesses. Their goal is to donate 1000 monkeys by Christmas, and anyone can help. Have a look at the link above for more information and email addresses, and join the Facebook page to have your say, add photos and look at some of the monkeys with their new owners.
If you're interested in making some, please use new socks and stuffing. Ann's bunny (I think :) above was made with only one sock and has the thoughtful addition of sewn-on eyes for very young children. I can't remember the title of the book she got it from, but here's another recent sock monkey book. Mine was made with two socks and I followed these instructions.
If you'd like to join us at Lucky Penny next time, we meet at Alphabet City in Eden Terrace at 7.30 on the first Tuesday of the month. We'll be finishing off our monkeys so we can take them to their new owners, so if you want to put yours in the box, you can drop it off and join us for a cup of tea :)
Hi there all; I'll be away for the next few days so just want to remind you of Lucky Penny next week. It's at Alphabet City in Mt Eden as usual, 7.30pm. We'll be making sock monkeys to send to Wellington so bring along your own scissors, needle and thread. Angela will have some new socks we can buy for a dollar or two, I'll bring some stuffing and Anne has a book to show us how. Hope to see you there!
What a success last night was! It's even inspired me to have a little blog renovation and list some of our wonderful friends (with blogs) in the side-bar.
Alphabet City proved to be an amazing venue with free parking, great lighting, a huge table and very friendly hosts. We had such a great time that Erin and Moira invited us to return next month, and so it seems that Lucky Penny has a new home. Here we all are sitting around that wonderful table (bar me, the photographer). There were so many talented people around that table: quilters, knitters, sewers, creative people who were keen to share ideas, books, fabrics, yarn, you name it. Come and join us next time for a drink and a chat and you're bound to make some really nice new friends too!
There was brownie too, and just in case you'd like to make it too, here's the recipe. It's my favourite: so easy and made with everyday baking ingredients; you don't even need chocolate.
Basic and speedy brownie (Donna Hay, Off the shelf)
Mix these together in food processor:
250g melted butter
1 1/3 c sifted flour
2 1/4c sugar
3/4c sifted cocoa powder
1/4 t baking powder
1 t vanilla essence
Pour into lined 20cm square cake tin and bake at 170 C for 50 min.
Happy 2012 to you! Ok, it's not so new any more, but I'm still on school holiday time... Not so sure if I'm lucky or not!
It's time for Lucky Penny next Tuesday, and I'm so excited about where we're having it. The lovely Erin and Moira from Alphabet City have invited us round for a little social gathering at 71 Mt Eden Rd, Eden Terrace. Erin and Moira are passionate about zines, the printed and written word, publishing and heaps more. They run classes and workshops too, and I hear their Letter Writing Club is very popular.
I hope to see you there, whether you've been before or not; it will be great to start the year off on such a high note! I'll bring some baking and you're welcome to bring something along too, but don't go overboard now ladies! As we said over on Facebook today, Lucky Penny is not the type of club to give you homework :) It's a show and tell though, so bring your craft books/projects/fabric/tools/whatever you've done over the holidays.
So: 7.30pm at Alphabet City, address above. We'll return to Mezze next month as usual. See you there x
Just a reminder before the weekend of the last Lucky Penny for the year on Tuesday night. As usual, we're in the back of Mezze bar in Durham Lane, 7.30. Hope to see you there for a coffee, wine some cake and maybe even a bit of crafting!
There won't be a Lucky Penny catch-up in January, remember, because we will all be on HOLIDAY!
