Uh, ok, sorry I couldn't resist that (Simpsons nerd).

Anyway this is just a quick lil post to say that Lucky Penny October is next Tuesday! I just can't believe that this month has come around so quickly. And with daylight savings, it is just beginning to feel like summer could be around the corner. So, LP is on at the usual Mezze Bar from 7.30pm onwards this Tuesday!

This is going to be a bit of a sad Lucky Penny for me as I'm going to be moving across the ditch to Melbourne at the end of October, so please say hello! Or good bye! Anyway I'm going to be doing a bit of a ruthless-sort-out of my craft supplies before I go, which means I will be giving away crafty things and the Lucky-Penny-ers get first dibs.

Last night was great fun, with 8 of us making our way to Mezze from mostly the Shore, but also Grey Lynn and New York. Anna aged gracefully and we all had delicious cake. Some Japanese craft magazines, detailed embroidery, pottery and knitting were admired, but nothing was actually made. A good night was had by all.

The Auckland Art and Craft Fair, to be exact. Very exciting, and organised by crafter-dynamos and Lucky Penny members Jess and Kylie, AKA Auckland Craft Collective. I know it's a bit late notice, but you have another couple of days to get your entries in for the Fair on 24th July. It's happening at the Auckland Art Gallery, sponsored by Base FM and Frankie magazine, and will feature the work of 'NZ's best contemporary and independent designers, crafters and artists'. Thats right! Lucky Penny April was great- we were joined by some of our regulars plus some newbies- lots of chitchat, cake and craft. Knitting still seems to be 'of the moment'- perhaps because autumn and winter (begrudingly) is looming, and it seems to be a comforting thing at this time of the year. A few copies of Ellie's lovely Extra Curricular magazine were spotted as the accesory du jour (buy one if you haven't already!) Keep crafting 'til next month!

Lucky Penny Seven

Well hello there! Only like a week has gone before I post about the last Lucky Penny. Lucky Penny Seven was a bit of a quiet one numbers-wise, but that didn't stop some lively discussions (...or rearranging our tables for a 'pretty-objects-in-low-lighting' photoshoot)! It seems so much that craft these days entails selling what you make, and selling online was the topic of the day (or evening I should say), you know... things like choosing good online stores, setting your prices, and getting the word out there. All good things to hear. On the craft show and tell front there was a dash of knitting and embroidery... but an absence of crafting-in-situ.

Apologies for the very delayed post, but you can blame a successful LP night on Tuesday. It was great fun to see everybody again after the holidays; we had the usual refreshments, crafting and a good discussion on the ethics involved in labelling work as 'hand-made'. It wasn't as serious as it sounds though :)

I can't believe LP has been going for 6 months now. If you've been wondering about whether you should come along next time; here's why you should:

LP is just a small group of friendly crafters (we're normally about 10 to 15).
You can learn a bit about the craft markets if you're new to it.
There's always a bit of show and tell about new projects and purchases.
You can get to know some very interesting people.
You can get help from some very talented people.

The last reason is also the reason I've been unable to tear myself away from my knitting. Penny showed me what I was doing wrong with my purl stitch, and Belinda showed us an awesome knitting technique, the Magic Loop. Thanks everyone, and see you next month!

Hello! First post at Lucky Penny for the new year- I can't believe that its very nearly February already. I hope that you are enjoying the long summer days and just hanging out with friends and family (or for a more reality check, wistfully gazing out the window at the sunshine while you are at the office!).

We had a lovely bunch of people at Mezze last night, where a blanket was being knitted, a cupcake pincushion constructed, and a few Maxes stuffed and stitched. Lots of cake consumed, and of course good conversation all round. It was such a perfect early-summer's evening, with Durham Lane all festively lit and people sitting outside, Ellie and I had to try the sangria. Highly recommended; next time I'm taking a taxi... I got some photos, but given the light, they're not fantastic. You get the idea though, hey: it's a cool place to be :)

Can you believe it?! 2009 has gone veeery quickly and Lucky Penny is definately one of the more positive things to come of it- craft is so much more fun when you share it. One of our very talented Lucky Penny members, Ellie Smith, has single-handedly put together a beautiful new publication called Extra-Curricular. It's a magazine about creative people who do their projects in their spare time: after work, when the kids are in bed, that sort of thing. The launch is this Thursday night, and the magazine will be on sale there for the first time. There will be cupcakes and creative people, among other things, and YOU are invited! Hello! This time, for Lucky Penny, we had managed to make a sign. Fancy, no? Lucky Penny night went really well, with a host of new faces and some mean looking knitting needles! We even took over the couches and the little tables this time… crafters in the corner! Lots of chatter and crafty design-y conversation ensued over cake, hot chocolate, wine and soup (mine). A few familiar faces were there- I’m talking about you Jessica, Jamie, Jason (all ‘J’ names by the way) and some new knitty and crochet-ing ladies from out west (I’m sorry if I did not catch your names!) And of course organizers Anna and Heleen. There was a bit manic knitting and crochet going on- a scarf was rustled up in the space of an evening on some very large needles- goodness! I felt very empty-handed…! Some interesting things happened- I got word of a creative Christmas ornament swap which I am keen to join- but be quick, you need to sign up by the 6th November. I’m thinking of ideas now… but like we say, there is nothing like conversation with like-minded people to inspire you!

Auckland Craft Collective

Something very exciting is happening: a craft business and networking group is being set up by the very motivated and resourceful Jessica Whiting and Kylie Richardson. The Auckland Craft Collective will start in March next year and will be in the form of monthly meetings with all sorts of experts speaking on topics like intellectual property, book keeping, branding, marketing, etc. What a great idea and something our budding little industry really needs! Will keep you updated here closer to the time.

No pictures again, so this one will have to do: Jessica's gorgeous crochet circle. Only one of the many things that happened last night. Coffee, wine, cake and tapas; some crafting; some show and tell; mostly lots of conversation. We had a full table, about 10 of us at the back of a very full Mezze bar. Next time I promise to have a big prominent sign, so you don't have to study every person in the place looking for signs of craftiness :) We had two brave new recruits doing just that (well done Jason and ... possibly Vicky; I'm terrible with names). Also Karla (the sewing half of Geekbooteek) and City (NZ Cupcake Queen) collectively AKA Kraftbomb, Bronwyn (Ran with Scissors), Sarah (Cotton Kiwi), Jessica (Bam Bam Creative), Jamie (Porcelain Rove), and of course Anna and Heleen. It was a really great night out, thanks guys!

There's some more craft market goodness about. Going by their blogs, the latest two are both possibly more in the Kraftbomb/Craftwerk genre, using words like 'funky' and 'alternative' to describe themselves.

Crafternoon Tea is on Saturday, 17 Oct in Kingsland. Times are 10 to 2 and tables are very cheap: $20 for full and $10 for half.

Love Handmade Craft Market is on Saturday, 14 Nov in Takapuna, 9 to 12.

It's time for the annual Auckland Vintage Textile Fair! It's a huge market where you can find treasures like vintage clothing (think feathers and beads), fabric, buttons, and all sorts of beautiful things under one roof. It was so popular last year, they got themselves a new venue. Here's the details:

Last night was our second Lucky Penny... on the first day of Spring.

In typical Anna-style I was dashing from one creative venture to the next, and somehow missed about half of those who had turned up due to my lateness. Oops! (So much for being a good organiser...)
Mezze Bar was quite busy that night and this time we had got ourselves a table in the midst of it all. Lucky Penny people are quite easy to spot... keep an eye out for yarn, crafty books, and an occasional project... So I was joined by co-organiser Heleen, Bron from Ran with Scissors, Helene who knits plus some new faces ...for coffee/wine/craft/chat/nibbles- yay! Lots of inspiration abound.

It's the business end of the year, with markets popping up like mushrooms. This week I've been contacted about two new markets in Auckland, so thought I'd better let you know about them. Both are looking for sellers of high-quality handmade items. While I'm talking of markets, the mother of them all, Kraftbomb, is turning one this Sunday. To celebrate and cope with demand, they're opening a 2nd room this month. Hope to see you there!

The Ruby Square Market will be held on Saturday 31st October, 14th November, 5th December, 12th December. "The concept behind this market is to provide a range of products that are original, stylish and of a premium quality. We envisage the products offered for sale will range from items designed and made in New Zealand to quality imported items.There will be a variety of stalls ranging from homeware, clothing, accessories, textiles, and craft from designers, artists, retailers and crafters." It will be held at the Greyfriars Church Hall, 544 Mt Eden Road, Mt Eden. The contact person is Debbie van Dijk.

The Royal Oak Market is hosted by CCS Disability Action, a not-for-profit organisation which supports people with disabilities. "The Royal Oak Market - building sustainable communities - will be held on 22 November 2009 at 14 Erson Avenue, Royal Oak. It will be a melting pot for the community, incorporating artisan products, fresh local produce together with craft, art, fashion and design. We are interested in providing a venue for innovative makers of contemporary craft, design, art and fashion to sell their work. The market will be held once each season and will include an inside area specifically for craft, design, art and fashion as well as stalls for fresh local produce, food and other products. Welcome to the first post of the Lucky Penny Crafty Club blog. Lucky Penny was the idea of Anna and Heleen after they thought it would be nice to have a place where they could catch up with fellow crafty types. So here's the plan: we meet the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm at Mezze Bar in Durham Lane. It's got a nice lounge with comfy couches where you can do some crafting over a coffee and some cake, or sangria and tapas, whichever takes your fancy. Everybody's welcome of course. You don't need to book or anything, just come along.

This blog will be where we remind you of the next get-together, but also to advertise anything of craft-related interest in the Auckland region; so let us know if you've got anything to share.

Ps: you don't have to do any crafting there either, the get-together is primarily social :)
